My Music Monday: Surf Gvng (On Everything) [@SurfGvng]
When you put something on everything, you know it’s real.
This song is in my head so I can’t let today end without doing My Music Monday and introducing you to this group.
First: This was called New Music Monday, but I just now changed it to My Music Monday because the songs may not always be new music, but they may be new to you. At the very least, my thoughts on it are new. All in all, it may more me than new but if you’re new to me then it’s new to you.
But today I need to tell you about Surf Gvng.
Pronounced Surf Gang, this South Miami duo’s music video for their self-entitled song is one of my favorite pieces of media right now.
Let’s start.
Who is Surf Gvng?
Surf Gvng: “Two convicted felons [Wolf and Geek] saved by grace, inspiring you to be the you God created to be.”
They are men of God with phenomenal testimonies of the fact that God can find you wherever you are and save you. Not a little save; more like drug-dealers-have-money-on-your-head-and-death-is-literally-watching-you type save.
Isaiah 59:1 says, “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear.”
Surf Gvng’s answer is absolutely not.
So what’s the song?
The song, also called Surf Gvng, is about “riding on our longboards & being thankful for the mercy God has given us. It’s more of who we are in Christ; being us.”
From the moment the beat dropped, I knew I would keep this on repeat. It’s been weeks. Then I found the music video and fell for it:
Why I love it:
Their energy for life, love for God and the fact that they are so apologetically hood and being completely real about it made this video an instant hit with me. I need them to not change because music, especially the Christians rap genre, needs people who look like them and who have those kinds of testimonies and real relationships with God. They remind me of my guys at church who I wish would draw closer to God. Surf Gvng looks like the after as I’m working with the before.
And if you think the song going to preach at you, it’s not. Just like they said, it’s about being who you are and riding in the freedom in Christ. Chains broken. Life reinstated.
After the bold proclamation of God’s mercy, what I love most is the fact that they’re longboarding. I love seeing black people—in this case, men—doing what usually isn’t expected of our race or culture. Maybe in Miami that’s all they do, but for the most part, with the exception of a few famous ones, I can’t say that black skate/longboarders have been prominent in my neighborhood or my newsfeed. But here are two black men weaving fluidly through their Miami neighborhood on longboards rapping about God’s mercy. I love it too much.
This was one of their first songs, so as all good artists do, they’ve evolved since then. But if this is how they started, can you imagine how they are now?
And they do it for the Name above all names.

This is actually the amazing interview that made me check them out. I relate deeply with their hearts for Christ and for meeting the physical needs of people, not only the spiritual:
How God came into—and saved—their lives:
If you have any time on your commute or have some minutes to spare, I highly recommend checking the above out.
